M-1 Visa for Vocational Students

M-1 visa is issued to students who come to the U.S. for vocational studies at vocational or nonacademic institutions. The application procedure for M-1 visa is almost the same as F-1 student. The student must have an I-20 M-N form issued by an USCIS authorized institutions, and meet same criteria as F-1.

Change of Status. M-1 students cannot change to H status if the basis of H visa categories is training or education received as M-1 student. They also cannot change to F-1 status.

Practical Training. M-1 students can also have practical training upon completion of the vocational studies. The maximum period of the training is no more than 6 months.

Family Members (spouse/children). They can accompany or follow to join the M-1 student with M-2 visas. No work without authorization.
